I've been a long-time fan of Pixel phones, but the camera system on the Pixel 11 feels like a step backward. While Google's consistent approach to photography has been impressive, the brand's reluctance to innovate has allowed competitors to surpass it in terms of camera hardware. The Pixel 11's camera upgrades are incremental, which is disappointing given the high price point of Pro models. This raises a deeper question: is Google's camera strategy becoming stale?
In my opinion, Google should be at the forefront of both image processing and hardware innovations. The company has a history of delayed upgrades, with the Pixel 6 Pro being the last major camera hardware change. Since then, Google has gradually refined its formula, but the backbone triple-camera concept is overdue for a full refresh. While the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL have some notable tweaks to the form factor, the upgrades are marginal and don't address the core issue of stale technology.
One thing that immediately stands out is the lack of a dedicated portrait photography lens. Chinese Ultra phones have been impressing me with their versatility, often powered by a 200MP telephoto camera with a modest 3x zoom lens. This allows them to deliver high-quality close-up and long-distance zoom, as well as powerful portrait photography. Google should consider adopting this approach to extract more flexibility from higher-quality sensors.
Furthermore, I think a high-end modern smartphone package could deliver astonishing image quality with just two cameras. A large, powerful sensor capable of switching between 18mm and 30mm or so would provide a better balance for subjects and landscapes than today's cameras, which tend to be wide (22mm) and even wider (17mm). This would be a bold move, but it could reinvigorate the Pixel series and help Google lead the field in camera technology.
In conclusion, while the Pixel 11 has some welcome upgrades, it's clear that Google's camera strategy needs a refresh. The company should embrace new camera technologies and take risks to build a truly best-in-class photography package for the Pixel 12. Only then can Google reclaim its position as a leader in the smartphone camera market.
